International Baccalaureate Information
WHAT IS THE IB PROGRAM?
Sunnybrae Elementary integrates the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program into our curriculum. The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF THE IB PROGRAM?
The IB aims to develop citizens who are internationally minded and who can make a positive impact on the world by demonstrating a set of attributes and values:
The curriculum model that the IB program uses is based on best practices that help the students make meaning of the world instead of just receiving knowledge. It's based on a constructivist approach that helps the students internalize the concepts and see them through broad topics. The teachers provide the students with activities and learning opportunities that are engaging, relevant and challenging. Teachers are also able to differentiate the learning for the students.
HOW IS THE IB PROGRAM INTEGRATED INTO THE CURRICULUM?
In the IB program, it is believed that learning takes place best when it is connected to what is genuinely a component of the world around the student, not merely what is all too often contrived and then imposed upon the student in school; that the acquisition of knowledge and skills and the search for meaning and understanding are best done in the context of the exploration of relevant content.
At each grade level, students are taught both the Common Core State Standards and the IB Primary Years program. These are taught through units of inquiry that are interdisciplinary and integrated across the curriculum subject areas. The units follow six interdisciplinary themes:
- Who We Are
- Where We Are in Place and Time
- How We Express Ourselves
- How the World Works
- How We Organize Ourselves
- Sharing the Planet
